California license plate laws you should know

Below are the four laws that most often trip up California drivers. Rules are enforced at the stop, the inspection station, and at registration renewal.

Two plates required

CVC §5200 requires two plates on passenger cars — front and rear. California has actively enforced this since 2018 and there is no exception for most coupes or sports cars.

Front plate rule

No exemption for vehicles sold without a front bracket; owners must add a bracket or face a fix-it ticket (CVC §5200a).

Registration stickers & display

Month tab goes on the left side of the rear plate, year tab on the right. Registration must be current and visible (CVC §5204).

Inspection / smog check

Biennial smog check required for most gasoline vehicles 1976 or newer; exempt: vehicles 8 model years old or newer and most diesels from 1997 or earlier.

Types of California license plates

California issues dozens of plate designs. These are the main categories you'll encounter on the road or see at the DMV counter.

Sequential passenger

Default 1ABC234 series issued to every new registration.

Environmental License Plate (ELP)

Personalized/vanity plates up to 7 characters.

Disabled Person (DP) / Disabled Veteran (DV)

Blue wheelchair symbol; qualifies for accessible parking.

Veteran & military

Purple Heart, Pearl Harbor Survivor, POW, Medal of Honor, and branch-specific plates.

Special interest

Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Coastal Commission, Breast Cancer, Kids — fees fund the cause.

Legacy Year of Manufacture (YOM)

Original 1950s–1980s California plates restored and reissued for era-correct vehicles.

What if my California plate is lost, stolen, or damaged?

Follow these steps to replace a California license plate. Do not keep driving with a missing plate — it is a citable offense in most states.

  1. 1
File a report with local law enforcement if the plates were stolen (required before DMV replacement).
  2. 2
Complete Form REG 156 (Application for Replacement Plates, Stickers, Documents).
  3. 3
Submit the form at a DMV field office with the $27 replacement fee.
  4. 4
Surrender any remaining plate from the pair if only one was taken.
  5. 5
Receive interim paperwork; new plates arrive by mail within a few weeks.
